About me
I'm a London-based artist, who is mostly a self-taught, although I did partake in some short evening classes to get me going! I've always been into sketching, and studied graphic design at university, followed by some years as a photographer. I only took up painting in my 40s (its never too late!) and had plenty time to practice during the pandemic when I started to used photographs from my past travels to work from as a point of reference.
I draw inspiration mostly from my travels, the sense of adventure and discovery I get when I travel to a new place, encountering new smells, tastes and of course the sights. I enjoy novelty, because it helps me see things with fresh eyes. I instantly know when I see something I want to paint.
Elements that attract me to a scene include reflections, shadows, intersecting angles and repeating lines, which echo my studies in graphic design. I use a colourful palette, which reflects the uplifting impact these journeys have on me and my awe for the natural world. I sketch and photograph various angles of my subject matter whilst on location and then paint in layers of acrylic and oils once I'm back home.
The exercise of painting has increased my levels of observation and translating how I experience the world around me. For me, this is also an exercise in patience and persistence as well as being a form of meditation and mindfulness.
